Work with TNS to Navigate the UK Wholesale Line Rental Switch

  1. In November 2017, BT announced that it would be switching off the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), marking one of the biggest changes in the UK telecom industry infrastructure during the past 30 years. The closure of the PSTN by BT will affect the copper related legacy access products of Openreach such as: WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) and all ISDN products.

Openreach has now begun to issue ‘Stop/Sell’ notices on legacy PSTN/WLR products where the local exchange has reached 75% fibre coverage (broadband). This will be followed up over the next three-years with further Stop/Sell notices in connection with the withdrawal of non-Ultrafast products. Openreach intend to close the PSTN at the end of 2025. The withdrawal of these services affects over 16 million lines in the UK, which will need to be migrated to a fibre based service.
