The 2026 SIPNOC conference highlighted a telecommunications industry navigating two major challenges at once: restoring trust in voice communications and modernizing the networks that power them. Across regulatory sessions, industry presentations and panels, discussions consistently focused on the need for stronger authentication, better consumer experiences and continued transformation of legacy networks to combat fraud and scams.

A strong message throughout the conference was the emphasis on ongoing efforts to identify and remove bad actors from the voice network. Topics such as provider accountability, STIR/SHAKEN effectiveness, call authentication, Know Your Upstream Provider (KYUP) requirements, Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD) compliance and the transition to an all-IP network were of concern. The overall goal is to increase transparency and accountability throughout the call path, help reduce fraudulent traffic, strengthen trust in legitimate calls and protect consumers from illegal robocalls and scams.

Branded calling was highlighted as an important tool for rebuilding trust by helping consumers recognize legitimate calls through verified brand information. Discussions explored the role of spoof protection in strengthening the call authentication ecosystem and addressing the unauthorized use of business phone numbers, helping reduce brand impersonation, protecting consumers and preserving trust in authorized calls.

Artificial intelligence (AI) emerged as a growing threat factor across the fraud and cybersecurity landscape. Cybersecurity experts warned that AI is accelerating the speed, scale and sophistication of attacks. According to a recent IBM study, one in four malicious breaches is now AI-enabled thus leading to a 56% year-over-year increase. At the same time, AI also presents an opportunity for CSPs to respond more effectively. CSPs are increasingly using AI to help identify suspicious activity using predictive call analytics that analyze communication patterns and respond to emerging threats quickly.

Beyond fraud prevention, the conference also focused heavily on network modernization. Multiple panels examined the ongoing transition from TDM to IP-based networks. Discussions around the Agreement-less IP Interconnection over the Internet (ALIII) proposal, a new standard developed by SIP Forum and ATIS, reflected the industry’s push to simplify interconnection and accelerate the transition to an all-IP ecosystem. While opinions varied on implementation, there was broad consensus that completing the IP transition is critical and a successful IP interconnection depends on authoritative routing and discovery mechanisms. Rural CSPs echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for predictable frameworks, reliability, quality, sustainable funding and clarity around IP interconnection models.

A key message from SIPNOC 2026 was that the future of voice depends on trust, call and text authentication, AI-driven protection and accelerating to an all-IP network. As scams grow in sophistication and legacy technologies reach retirement, the industry remains aligned around a common goal of building a secure and modern communications ecosystem that helps protect consumers, enterprises and the integrity of the voice network itself.

The themes discussed throughout SIPNOC 2026 closely align with the challenges many service providers and enterprises are addressing today. Solutions such as TNS Branding and Call Authentication Suite can help rebuild consumer confidence by delivering verified brand information and trusted call experiences that encourage consumers to answer legitimate calls. At the same time, as CSPs modernize their networks and transition to IP-based architecture, accurate and centralized routing intelligence becomes increasingly important. TNS TruOps Telecom Routing Administration (TRA) supports this evolution by providing the trusted IP routing data needed to streamline operations, help improve service delivery and prepare networks for future growth.
